I have been to my fair share of networking events, and my general conclusion is, they are a fantastic waste of time. Since we are all about saving time, and maximizing value for your business, I felt it appropriate to write this blog article listing (everyone loves lists!) the top 3 reasons why you should NOT attend a networking event!
Decision Makers DO NOT ATTEND networking events
If you stop to look around a networking event, you will have many very well dressed, energetic, young sales people all bouncing around the room trying to sell their services. Then you will have a few people like you, who went because a good friend invited you, or you thought that sales need a boost, so I will go to meet new people and see what happens. The reality is, decision makers are at home with their family, pets, and hobbies
Networking Events are bad for your health!
Morning networking events are usually at the crack of dawn, and let’s face it, nobody likes to be up that early! Lunchtime networking events typically involve all those food types that put you to sleep or slow you down – this affects your productivity. Evening networking events typically involve unhealthy appetizers such as loaded fries, wings, pizza, etc… not to mention the alcohol
There are better things to do!
I recently spoke with a sales person who goes networking three times per week. When we calculated the amount of time going there, attending, and coming home, he was spending a minimum of 10 hours per week on networking. With those 10 hours, he could have spent them with family, developing a skill, or having fun with friends! The likelihood is, he would have the same sales funnel, but a better quality of life!
What I am getting at here is that if you are going to networking events to sell, then you are wasting your time. If you are looking to meet people, then networking events are useful, but be sure to bring that garlic and holy water to deter those OTT sales people.
One of Meeting Curator’s greatest strengths is that it builds warm leads with decision makers. Therefore, you do not need to attend these “Ultimate Networking Fest”, “Best Networking Event in the Entire Universe”, and “Important CEO’s Networking” events.
